What is Power Integrity Analysis?

The analysis of power integrity in PCBs involves examining their Power Delivery Network (PDN), comprising components like the VRM, power planes/areas, decoupling capacitors, and other devices along the power pathway. While it may seem straightforward to view power integrity (PI) solely as guaranteeing adequate power supply to the active elements on the board, the PDN serves dual and interconnected functions:

  • It supplies the correct voltage and current to powered components, fulfilling steady-state and surge current requirements across suitable frequencies..
  • Ensuring minimal disruptions and coupling, it establishes a clean, continuous return path for high-speed nets, facilitating signal transmission from driver to receiver. Inadequate PDN design may lead to signal interference owing to shared return paths.

Power integrity analysis typically progresses through three stages. The initial two stages focus on the delivery of power to components, while the third stage addresses interactions between high-speed signals and the PDN.
